St. Joseph’s College thanks and commends you for your service. As a veteran, you are a member of a unique population. Unlike many other college students, you have already had training and job experience in the military.

However, it may be difficult to connect those experiences with potential majors and future job opportunities. Indeed, the transition from the military to college and civilian life can be challenging. Below you will find a number of resources that can be used to assist you in making a successful transition from a military to a civilian career.  

Career Search Strategies for Student Veterans

  • Research careers by exploring The Occupational Outlook Handbook and O*NET Online. Match your skills, interests, values, accomplishments, experience, personality traits and goals with career information that you find at these sites.
  • Join professional organizations and affiliations in your field, and continuously update your LinkedIn profile. LinkedIn can be especially useful for veterans because it can help you connect with military officers and assist you in networking with various veterans groups.
  • Further develop your critical thinking, active listening, decision making, interpersonal and organizational skills through participation and continued leadership in campus activities.
  • Develop excellent computer skills and learn relevant software packages.
  • Gain relevant experience in potential careers through internships, informational interviewing, part-time jobs and volunteer experiences.
  • Network continuously with family, friends, neighbors, faculty, students and other people that you come into contact with on various occasions.
