NYS Certification Reqs

To receive Initial Teaching Certification, the New York State Department of Education requires the following:

  • The candidate must pass the Educating All Students (EAS) Test.
  • The candidate must pass the Academic Literacy Skills Test (ALST).
  • The candidate must pass the Content Specialty Test.
  • The candidate must successfully complete the EDTPA e-portfolio assessment.
  • The candidate must complete a workshop on child abuse.
  • The candidate must complete a workshop on school violence.
  • The candidate must complete a workshop on the Dignity for All Students (DASA).
  • The candidate must be fingerprinted and the report must be sent to the New York State Education Department.
  • The candidate must be recommended as having satisfactorily completed the University’s New York state-approved program in the respective discipline.

NOTE

The candidate must use the online TEACH system to submit the application for Initial Teaching Certification to the New York State Education Department’s Office of Teaching, through St. Joseph's University’s Department of Education, along with the required application fee.
